What’s in a name? How to pick a name for your pet & comprehensive pet name list

Bringing home your new pet is one of the best feelings in the world! We recently brought a new kitten into the family, a blue-silver-spotted-tabby Scottish Fold little girl.

Look at that face! We were instantly in love. However, we faced a predicament… what do we call her?! Before picking her up we had planned on calling her ‘Cat’ (original, I know) as a throwback to Holly Golightly’s cat in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. We even had a gorgeous name-tag made up by one of our wonderful suppliers, Made by Cleo (who make stunning cat collars – seriously, check them out!), that said “Cat” on one side and “We’re alike me & Cat. A couple of poor nameless slobs” on the back (a quote from the Breakfast at Tiffany’s film).

Audrey Hepburn and Cat in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The kitty who played Cat was called Orangey, a male marmalade tabby cat. Orangey went on to have quite a prolific career - he even played the cat in the 1959 film adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank!

When we met our kitty, she didn’t feel like a “Cat”. I’ve always been told that it’s best to wait until you meet your pet before naming them and my experience has confirmed this theory for me. What if your pet turns out to be super fast (“Speedy”), graceful (“Grace”) or talkative (“Meowbert”) – it’s a wonderful idea to incorporate a pet’s personality and traits into its name!

After much research and experimentation, we finally settled on “Kiku” (although Kisa and Kisu were close contenders). Kiku means chrysanthemum in Japanese and just seemed to fit our delicate, beautiful little kitten. She has since learnt her name in record speed… a good sign I say

On our journey to find the perfect name we stumbled across so many amazing pet names. So I figured why not share them with everyone! I’ll keep adding to this list as I find new, amazing names. I hope one is just right for your new bundle of joy!

P.S. Please leave any suggested names or the names of your pets in the comments and I’ll add them to the list!

Unique names for your new Cat, Dog, Bird, Bunny, Pony… names for all pets really!*

*You won’t find your typical ‘Bella’s or ‘Max’s here – they are lovely names but this list focuses on some less popular names you might not yet have considered for your best buddy!

Welcome to Haus of Hund’s Blog!

Hi there!

Welcome to our first blog post that’s welcoming you to our welcoming website! Okay, a lot of welcoming. Regardless, welcome to Haus of Hund, an online boutique for pets and pet lovers, based in Sydney, Australia. We stock beautiful, high-quality, ethically-sourced, and unique products for cats and dogs, as well as gifts for you and your home!

Maybe I should introduce myself… I’m Oslo! An 8 month old, silver dapple, Miniature Dachshund. I may technically just be a puppy but I’m very mature for my age! I have many roles at Haus of Hund including, Model, Mascot, Product Quality Control Officer, and Treat-Tester. I’m kind of a big deal. Check out this photo of me!

Wow, so nobel. Much sophisticated puppy. Definitely not photoshopped!
Wow, so nobel. Much sophisticated puppy. Definitely not photoshopped!

Although all of these roles may make it seem like I’m all business, I also like to let my fur down. Here’s me at a recent party rocking my favourite lifesaver costume from Haus of Hund!

Mum... you said it was a costume party. NO ONE ELSE IS DRESSED UP.
Mum… you said it was a costume party. NO ONE ELSE IS DRESSED UP.

Don’t let my face in that photo fool you, I was loving my outfit and so did everyone else. They liked it so much, all of my puppy friends tried it on! Take a look.

I think I wore it best, but I’ll let you decide. If you want to look as cool as me and my friends, why not check out Haus of Hund’s range of costumes and couture! My lifesaver costume can be found here.

Love and licks,

OSLO signature
